The history of Ashtabula County Medical Center (ACMC) is the story of a rural community meeting the challenges of their healthcare needs. It's the story of a hospital's successful evolution from a one-room, wooden-framed structure to a multi-specialty healthcare system serving family, friends, and visitors with world class medical expertise and human compassion. Every step since the hospital opened in 1904 has been taken because the Ashtabula community recognized the need for health care and medical leadership close to home.

The December 29, 1876 Ashtabula Train Disaster was the catalyst. 156 passengers were on board that train when it plunged into the icy Ashtabula River during a blizzard. Because there was no hospital, the generous people of Ashtabula extended their homes and businesses to help the injured passengers. With only 10 physicians in the village, a special train was arranged to bring additional physicians in from Cleveland. Many of the wounded were taken back to Cleveland via this train for further treatment. Ninety-two of the passengers died.

The need continues today. Providing medical expertise combined with human compassion where we live, work and play continues to be challenged by the cost of providing that service and by Ashtabula's distance to urban centers. ACMC rises to that challenge every day by working tirelessly for the good of its patients, its community and all who look to it for medical and community leadership.
